A freestanding range is a finished box that stands on its own between two cabinets. A slide-in is built to sit inside the counter run, with its cooktop overlapping the countertop on both sides so there’s no gap and no visible side panel. Which is why this isn’t really an appliance question. Cabinet openings and countertop cutouts get built to a specific model’s published dimensions, and those dimensions get locked into an order weeks before anything is delivered. Choose the range after the cabinets are ordered and you’re not choosing anymore, you’re adapting, usually with a filler strip that shouldn’t be there.

What Is the Difference Between a Slide-In and a Freestanding Range?

Three things: the sides, the back, and where the controls live. A freestanding range has finished side panels because it’s designed to be seen from either side, and it usually carries a raised back panel with the controls on it. A slide-in has unfinished sides, no back panel, and controls on the front or the cooktop.

The visual consequence is what most people are actually buying. Because a slide-in’s cooktop laps over the counter on both sides, there’s no seam for crumbs to fall into and the backsplash runs uninterrupted behind it. A freestanding range’s back panel interrupts that backsplash, which is fine in plenty of kitchens and jarring in the ones designed around a continuous run of tile or slab.

Because a slide-in sits partly on the countertop and a freestanding range sits entirely beside it. That difference decides how the countertop is cut, how deep the base cabinets run at that spot, and whether the counter fabricator needs a notch. All three are specified before fabrication, not adjusted afterward.

  • The countertop cut. A slide-in needs the counter cut to the manufacturer’s cutout dimension so the cooktop lands on it correctly. Get that wrong on a stone top and you’re re-fabricating a slab, not trimming a board.

That volume loss is real and worth being honest about. To hold the same capacity in a shallower box, manufacturers make counter-depth models wider and taller, which means the opening they need isn’t just less deep, it’s a different opening entirely.

A refrigerator that technically fits the opening but can’t open its crisper drawer is a common and entirely preventable outcome.

What Does Panel-Ready Actually Require?

It requires the cabinet order and the appliance order to happen together. A panel-ready appliance ships without a finished front and accepts a custom panel made from your cabinet door material, so the dishwasher or refrigerator disappears into the run. That panel is a cabinet item, built to the appliance manufacturer’s panel specification.

Two things follow from that and both are sequencing problems. The panel dimensions come from the appliance, so the model has to be chosen before the cabinet order is placed, not after. And the panel has to be finished in the same batch as the doors it sits beside, because a panel made later from the same nominal finish can land visibly off against doors that were sprayed months earlier.

It’s also worth knowing that panel-ready isn’t only a look. Handle style, hinge type and panel weight limits are all specified by the appliance, and some models require handles mounted in particular positions. When Do the Appliances Have to Be Chosen?

Before the cabinet order is released, which is earlier than most homeowners expect. You don’t have to buy them that day, and in most cases you shouldn’t. What you have to do is commit to specific models so their published specification sheets can drive the cabinet drawing and the countertop template.

That distinction between choosing and purchasing is the one that makes this manageable. Appliances sitting in a garage for two months is its own problem, and delivery timing should track the install schedule. But the specification is free, published, and available the moment you pick a model.
