A ductless range hood doesn’t clear your kitchen air. It filters some of it and hands the rest straight back to the room. A recirculating unit pulls air through a grease filter and usually a charcoal filter, then blows it back out at the top of the hood. The grease gets caught. The heat, the steam and most of the odor stay in the kitchen with you.
That’s not automatically the wrong choice, but it should be a choice. The expensive version of this decision is the one made by accident, when nobody checked whether a duct could reach an exterior wall until the cabinets above the range were already ordered. By then you’re not choosing a hood anymore. You’re accepting the one your layout left you.
What Does a Ductless Range Hood Actually Remove?
Grease, mostly. A recirculating hood traps airborne grease in a metal mesh filter and passes the air through charcoal to reduce odor before returning it to the room. What it can’t do is move anything out of the house, so the moisture from a boiling pot and the heat from a hot pan stay exactly where they were.
That distinction matters more than the marketing suggests. Researchers in the Indoor Environment Group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory put the test simply, noting that “Range hoods are the most effective way to do this, if your range hood actually moves air out of the kitchen.” The qualifier is the whole sentence.
A hood that recirculates is doing filtration, not ventilation, and those are different jobs.
There’s a maintenance consequence too. Charcoal filters load up and stop working, and unlike a grease screen you can’t wash them and put them back. They get replaced on a schedule, and a recirculating hood whose charcoal was last changed two years ago is functionally a noisy light fixture. Nobody tells you that at the appliance counter.
Is a Ducted Hood Always the Better Answer?
On performance, yes. A ducted hood is the only version that removes moisture and heat from the house, and moisture is the one that quietly does damage. On practicality it depends entirely on whether a duct route exists that doesn’t wreck the rest of the kitchen to build.
Moisture is the underrated half of this. Grease is visible and annoying; steam is invisible and cumulative. A kitchen that dumps the moisture from daily cooking back into the room is loading it into cabinet finishes, paint and whatever’s above the ceiling. Over years that shows up as finishes that fail early rather than as a dramatic event, which is precisely why it doesn’t get blamed on the hood.
The honest counterweight is that a badly ducted hood isn’t much better than a ductless one. A duct with too many turns, a run that’s far too long, or a flexible line that’s been crushed behind a cabinet will strangle the airflow the hood was rated for.
Ducted is the better answer when the duct is short, reasonably straight, rigid and actually terminates outside. It’s a worse answer when it terminates in an attic.
Where the Duct Can Actually Run
This is the part of the decision that belongs to the house rather than to the appliance, and it’s the reason the answer changes kitchen to kitchen on the same street. The hood has to reach the outside, and there are only a handful of ways it can.
- Straight out the back. The range sits on an exterior wall, the duct goes through it, and the run is a couple of feet. This is the easy case and it’s the one that makes the decision obvious.
- Up through the cabinet and out the roof. Workable when the range is on an interior wall and there’s nothing but attic above. The chase eats the inside of the cabinet above the hood, which is storage you were counting on.
- Up and over to a side wall. Common in older homes, and it means a soffit or a bulkhead to hide the horizontal run. That soffit is a design element you now have to want.
- Nowhere clean. A second story with finished rooms above, a range on an interior wall, and no chase. This is the case where ductless stops being a compromise and starts being the realistic option.
Notice that three of those four change the cabinets. That’s why this can’t be settled after the cabinet order, and it’s the same category of constraint as what moving the range actually sets in motion. Venting through an exterior wall or roof also brings the work into permitted scope, which your remodeler handles as part of the job.
How Much Airflow Does Your Cooking Need?
More than most people buy, and it depends on what you cook rather than on the size of the kitchen. Hoods are rated in cubic feet per minute, and the number that matters is what the hood moves once it’s connected to your actual duct, not the figure on the box measured with no ductwork attached at all.
Two things drive the requirement. The first is the cooking surface underneath, because a high-output gas range or a griddle throws off far more heat and moisture than a modest four-burner. The second is how you cook.
The Berkeley researchers note that frying and broiling at high temperatures produce more pollutants than gentler methods, so a household that sears and fries several nights a week has a genuinely different requirement from one that mostly boils and reheats.
Two sizing habits are worth adopting regardless of which hood you pick. Make the hood at least as wide as the cooking surface, and wider if the design allows, because capture happens at the edges where the plume drifts.
And keep the mounting height inside the range manufacturer’s specified window, since a hood mounted too high stops catching the plume and a hood mounted too low is a hazard over an open flame. Both of those are settled on the elevation drawing, not on installation day.
When Is Ductless the Right Call?
When there’s genuinely no duct path, when the alternative is a run so compromised it wouldn’t perform anyway, or when the kitchen is a secondary one that sees light use. Choose it deliberately, size it properly, and then plan the rest of the room around the fact that the moisture has to leave some other way.
If you land here, the follow-through matters. Put the charcoal filter changes on a calendar rather than trusting yourself to notice. Use the hood every time you cook, not only when something smokes, because the filtration only works while the fan runs. And open a window or run a nearby exhaust fan when you’re doing the cooking that generates the most steam.
What we’d push back on is choosing ductless purely to protect the cabinet above the range. That’s a real trade, but it’s one worth making with the numbers in front of you rather than as a reflex. Frequently Asked Questions
Can a ductless range hood be converted to a ducted one later?
Many hoods are sold as convertible, so the unit itself often can be. The hard part isn’t the appliance, it’s the duct. Converting means opening a path through cabinetry, wall or ceiling after everything is finished, which is why the conversion is usually far more disruptive than people picture when they buy the convertible model.
Is an over-the-range microwave a real substitute for a hood?
It’s a compromise, and most of them are installed in recirculating mode. The fan sits higher and further forward than a dedicated hood, and the capture area is smaller, so it catches less of the plume. Some models can be ducted, which helps considerably. Treat it as a space-saving decision rather than a ventilation one.
Does a downdraft vent work as well as an overhead hood?
Generally not, because it’s fighting physics. Heat and steam rise, and a downdraft has to pull them sideways and down before they get away. It’s a genuinely useful answer for an island where an overhead hood would be wrong for the sightlines, but it isn’t the performance equal of a well-sized hood above the range.
Why does my hood seem loud but not very effective?
Usually the ductwork rather than the hood. Noise goes up and performance goes down when air is being forced through a run that’s too long, too narrow, full of bends, or made of crushed flexible duct. A hood rated generously on paper can deliver a fraction of that once the duct fights it the whole way.
Can a range hood vent into the attic or a crawlspace?
No. Terminating a hood inside the building envelope moves grease and moisture into a space that can’t handle either, and it’s a moisture problem waiting to happen rather than a shortcut. The duct has to terminate outside through a proper cap. If a home inspection turns this up, treat it as a real finding.
Do I need a hood if I have an electric or induction cooktop?
Yes. Electric and induction don’t produce combustion byproducts, which is a genuine advantage, but the food does the rest. Searing, frying and boiling generate the grease, smoke and steam regardless of what’s heating the pan. The heat source changes part of the picture, not the need to get cooking moisture out of the room.
Settle the Hood Before the Cabinets Are Ordered
The ducted-versus-ductless question looks like an appliance decision and behaves like a layout decision. Where the range sits, what’s above it, and whether a short clean duct run exists will decide the answer for you before anybody compares two hoods on a spec sheet. Which is why it belongs in the design conversation, alongside the cabinet elevations, rather than in the appliance selection at the end.
If the duct path is easy, duct it and stop thinking about it. If it isn’t, decide ductless with your eyes open, size the hood to the cooking you actually do, and build the filter changes into the plan. Both are defensible. Only one of them is a surprise.
